How to interpret BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is NOT a good measure of your fitness level. It was developed in the early 1800's by Adolphe Quetelet to provide a standard calculation for weight to height ratios. It is often used as a general indicator of fitness because, statistically peoples' fitness level tends to follow the BMI curve. So, on to the good news (or bad, as the case may be):
| Category: | BMI |
| Starving | less than 16.5 |
| Underweight | from 16.5 to 18.5 |
| Normal | from 18.5 to 25 |
| Overweight | from 25 to 30 |
| Obese | from 30 to 35 |
| Clinically Obese | from 35 to 40 |
| Morbidly Obese | above 40 |
How it's calculated:
In kilograms and meters: weight / height2
In inches and pounds: weight * 703 / height2
